PODCAST: Who is wearing the balloon hats at the UH volleyball games? We find out on “Upfront” podcast

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – You’ve probably seen her at the Rainbow Wahine volleyball games — the woman with extravagant balloon hats.
Ever wonder who she is?
Let us introduce you to Gwen Nakamura. She is the Assistant Band Director at UH and has been working at the university for more than three decades!
No matter the sport, Nakamura says the band brings excitement and energy to all of UH’s games.
“You know, when something exciting happens and we do something in response to that, or if you know it’s not going as well, then we have to encourage a crowd to cheer along and you know to become vocal and have that home court advantage right,” said Nakamura.
“I think it’s just … trying to create that atmosphere for the students so that they can have fun and they have energy at the game and that we can be the catalyst for like cheering or crowd … I just love it.”
She tells us more about the band and the story behind all of the balloon hats on this month’s episode of “Upfront with Guy Hagi.”
